Functional Home Remodels, Money-Saving Tips, and Holiday Fun

This time of year is so special to the Hatfield team. But with all the giving, dining, and family fun at home and on the go, the holiday season can also get pricey. We’ve assembled some easy ways you can keep your costs down this season — from high-efficiency toilets to retail shortcuts. At Hatfield, we’re not just about gorgeous home remodels — we want you to enjoy your down time to the fullest.

At home: Is your Dallas abode costing you more money than necessary. In our bathroom remodels, we suggest conserving water with a toilet featuring a dual flush option. We love the Toto brand — it’s well-made, attractive, and comes complete with flush options to optimize your water savings. That’s a plus for the environment — and your wallet! Other ideas include a tankless water heater (our go-to is by Rinnai), water-conserving faucets, and Energy Star appliances. Check out the Delta Dryden faucet to use in your new bathroom. The magic of this one is, it feels you’re getting more flow, when you’re actually conserving water; that’s a score for any home. Thermador makes one of our favorite dishwashers — powerful, quiet, and Energy Star certified. Hatfield also highly recommends the Kitchen Aid refrigerator shown — it proves you don’t have to budge on aesthetics to get an affordable and efficient appliance that costs less to run.

MONEY-SAVING TIPS FOR HOLIDAY SHOPPING IN DALLAS OR TRAVELING TO VISIT FAMILY:

Shopping for gifts — Always look for dot-com promo codes before checking out with your items on any website (check PromotionalCodes.com or RetailMeNot.com for offers). Also note that some of your favorite brands offer free shipping throughout the holiday season, including Target.

Headed to the store in person? Be informed of which items go on sale daily and when. Despite the hype, Black Friday isn’t always the best day for deals — many retailers take advantage of eager shoppers by hiking prices up. Retail experts agree: cars are cheapest in December, most grocery chains lower prices on Wednesdays, and fashion powerhouses tend to add new sale items on Thursdays.

Traveling — despite the excitement, it can get expensive and exhausting. Avoid overpriced (and not very nutritional!) snack stops along the way, whether you’re on the road or in the air. Create snack packs in advance filled with pretzels, organic gummies, and other treats that only feel sinful — and save cash along the way. If you’re planning a hotel stay, scout the best deals through Gilt City and LivingSocial — they often have pricy add-on’s included for free. Also, avoid air travel on Sundays, Fridays, and the days right before and after major holidays, when fares tend to be highest.

DESIGNER’S CORNER

Catch the eye of holiday guests with pretty details, from those you make yourself to handmade touches you can purchase. We’re wild for the dolls made by this local mother-daughter artisan team, a Home Sewn Holiday. Guests will remark on how cute they look camped out at the foot of your stairwell, on a chair in the living room, and so on. Festive, fun, and a great way to “buy local” — something Hatfield truly believes in.

We also love the idea of a rustic centerpiece that does double-duty protecting your table from hot food plates. Jacob Studenroth of the Wise Old Dog wine and liquor store (yes, they ship!) says this decorative tray took him under ten minutes to fashion. Save your wine corks (natural only — synthetic will melt if you’re using it as a trivet) and arrange on a dollar-store or antique tray. You can pop a pillar or votive candle in the middle for festive brightness or leave it corks-only and use for hot serving dishes throughout the season. Start saving your corks now — we never balk at an excuse to open a bottle!

KRIS KRINGLES OF DALLAS

Take the kiddos out on the town for some much-deserved fun. There might be tons of options for sitting in Santa’s lap in and around Dallas, but the Hatfield team has moms and dads reporting live on the scene with our annual favorites:

North Park Mall, Dallas

Parents report that this Santa is the most realistic one around and the pictures always come out great thanks to an awe-inspiring Christmas setup. We also won’t complain that this spot touts some of the best shopping in the area, from The Disney Store to Louis Vuitton. Just make sure to leave extra “line time” and pack snacks because this popular choice comes with a longer wait time than other area malls.

Collin Creek Mall, Plano

A lot of our clients have pets, and we believe your furry friends deserve to get the royal treatment with a Santa photo opp, too. At this popular spot off North Central Expressway in Plano, enter on level #3 by Sears with your pet and proceed to the Santa station from there. Other perks of this mall include free WiFi in every corner and plenty of snacking opps.

Stonebriar Mall, Frisco

Parents with frisky, shy, or disinterested little ones will adore the Santa who spends his Decembers at the Stonebriar Mall in Frisco. Known to be extra patient, he’ll wait tirelessly while the perfect photo is achieved. In addition to the cute scenery and sweet Santa, Stonebriar offers holiday specials throughout the season, so make sure to reserve some shopping time, too.
