Project Update: The 2015 Model ReModel

Model ReModel great room

Earlier this summer, we let you know about an exciting partnership between Hatfield (now Alair Homes- Plano) Builders & Remodelers and Professional Remodeler magazine known as the 2015 Model ReModel. This unique project showcases a complex renovation project from concept to completion, giving remodelers and viewers an idea of what makes a design great, how to select products and materials, best practices, and helpful tips and tricks. Hatfield (now Alair Homes- Plano) Builders & Remodelers was hand-selected to be the contractor for the Model ReModel.

Currently the Model ReModel is approximately 70% complete. Here are some of the latest developments in the project.

Slightly more ornate trim stays true to the home’s overall design.

Trim selection and installation. Carrie Hatfield of Carrie Hatfield Interior Design in Dallas (no relation to Chad) opted for ornate trim in place of crown molding in the house. “I love crown moulding, but the majority of the rooms have eight-foot ceilings and for me, adding that element on top makes the space feel a little cramped,” she explained. “Another reason I selected slightly more ornate trim is to stay true to the home’s overall design. The house has a classic-transitional look with clean lines and a lot of white. It’s important that the design remain consistent so it doesn’t feel like a mish-mash of unrelated pieces.”

Honed marble slabs ready for use at the Model ReModel project.

Countertop installation. The owners selected statuary marble countertops with a honed finish that can be expected to last for centuries. The original idea was to bull-nose the edges of the counter, but it would make the project go over budget. Instead, the edges were lightly rounded and smoothed.

Cabinet construction. Our project manager, Greg Bailey, explained that the 3/4″ plywood used on the end panels of the cabinetry in the Model Remodel makes for a sturdier and more durable cabinet.

Next up: the house will soon be painted using Benjamin Moore® paints. We anticipate the Model Remodel project will be complete mid-December. Stay tuned for more updates, and see what’s happening on the job site today!
