Remodeling Trends: Family-Friendly Drop Zones

Does your home contain an assortment of backpacks, purses, phones, laptops, tablets, cords and chargers that never seem to be in the right place at the right time? Over time, this hodgepodge can result in clutter and disorganization in the home, leading to misplaced items and frequent frustration.  Finding a safe yet convenient place for electronics and accessories can be tricky, but it’s a challenge that Hatfield’s in-house designers have a solution for: a drop zone.

Keep the Clutter at Bay

A drop zone is a customized organization center that may incorporate any combination of cabinets, shelves, drawers, hooks and an electronics charging station, with a counter that can serve as a home for mail and other items that commonly accumulate on the kitchen table or countertops. Its location just inside an entry door, usually coming in from the garage, is an immediate reminder to drop keys, briefcases, backpacks and gadgets in a designated location when arriving home from work or school.

The cabinetry and counters of a drop zone are designed to coordinate with your kitchen or other built-ins, and can be designed to your specifications. This area could also contain storage space for pantry items and other family essentials.

Designing a Drop Zone

mudroomTo determine how to organize your drop zone, we’ll want to know which items your family members routinely drop when they arrive home each day. Is it coats and wraps, car keys or backpacks? Do you have school-age children who leave shoes lying in the middle of the floor, or is the dog leash constantly being misplaced? Once we know which drop zone items are issues, it’s time to come up with a strategy that works for your home and family.
